Exam Style Questions

The Indians adapted well to the conditions of the Great Plains.

(a) Briefly describe the main features of the Great Plains.

The main features of the Great Plains - The great plains is a large piece of land, long overgrown grass and you wouldn't see nothing for miles. The tepee was made from very little wood. This was because there was not a lot of tree's around. They hunt buffalo and they use their skin to wrap around the poles of wood, this makes it something they can live in. Buffalo were one of the main features of the Great Plains becuse they were used for food, clothes, weapons and lots more.
(b) Explain why the plains Indians lived in the tepees.

The Indians lived in tepees because they could be packed up and moved to a new location to follow the the buffalo herds. The Indians lived in tepees because of the shortage of the wood and other building materials. The Indians also lived in tepees because they were very useful they had smoke flaps so that in the winter they could have a fire in the tepee and it wouldn't get all smokey in the tepee. They had a few poles of wood that the would use to hold the tepee together these few poles of wood would be used untill they broke or couldn't hold the tepee together any more.

Buffalo hunt.

In this video it shows what the Native American Indians wore when going on a buffalo hunt, which includes: a large brown coloured cloth over their body; this might be made from buffalo skin or fur, feathers in their hair and most of the time nothing on their feet. Their weapons include: bow and arrows, spears and sharp objects; these are useful for the indians so they can throw the weapons at the buffalo and they just drop to the ground; its easier for them. The Indians try to seperate the weaker buffalo from the others, this is easier for thie indians because the weaker buffalo are slower and easir to catch. They hunt the buffalo on a horse as it would be very hard for them to hunt buffalo on foot because they would of got seriously hurt and the buffalo are to fast for them to hunt on foot. After they've got enough buffalo they stop the hunt and start taking the buffalo back to the camp, for the women to start skinning them for blankets and clothes, the bones were used for weapons and the meat for food.
Although this source is a good peice of evidence of how the indians lived, it is not all true because this is a film and it is made to entertain people.
